On Tuesday, the New York Knickerbockers partnered with Sweet to launch the NBA team’s very first non-fungible token (NFT) collection. The NFTs offer digitally designed, limited-edition 3D game tickets that have been specially made for the Atlantic Division basketball team. With less than 24 hours of auction time remaining, the Knicks’ NFT sale has sold out a number of tickets.

3D NFT tickets to 5 classic New York Knicks games

A number of NBA teams are getting into blockchain technology and many American professional basketball teams have gotten involved in all kinds of crypto concepts such as NFTs and partnerships aimed at increasing the adoption of cryptocurrencies.

The NBA has its own Blockchain Advisory Committee and teams like the Portland Trail Blazers, Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers have recently entered the blockchain battle. This week the New York Knicks unveiled their very first NFT collection as the professional team recently partnered with NFT marketplace Sweet to auction the collectibles.

Five game tickets have been issued in Knick’s NFT collection and so far three of the tickets have been sold out. Then there is the auction item of the 2020-2021 commemorative plaque from Knick. “Commemorate the Knicks 2020-2021 season with this unique 3D NFT that shows all 5 tickets,” explains nyknft.com. “The highest bidder receives the 1-of-1 ticket badge and the embossed number 1 of all 5 individual ticket NFTs that are delivered to a preferred wallet.”

As per the description of the plaque auction item, the five games highlighted by digital tickets in the plaque include:

  • April 9: OT victory over the Memphis Grizzlies as an indication of 9-game winning streak
  • April 24: 9th straight win after defeating the Toronto Raptors
  • May 16: Victory against the Boston Celtics at the end of the regular season and fourth place for the playoffs of the Eastern Conference
  • May 23: First playoff game at MSG in 8 years & largest indoor event in NYC since March 2020
  • May 26th: Knicks equalized a deficit of 13 points at halftime to level the series 1: 1

The memorial plaque auction ends on Saturday, July 31st at 12:00 PM (EDT), and the current highest bid from Sweet marketplace user “Esteban M.” stands at $ 5,565.55. The NFT tickets for the Knicks’ OT victory on April 9th and the ninth consecutive victory on April 24th are the only two remaining single tickets for the 3D game. According to the auction website, the New York Knicks NFTs are Ethereum-based ERC721 token collectibles.

Non-fungible tokens have received a lot of attention lately, and the hype has gotten so expensive that some projects are fractionating NFTs. Popular television stars and entrepreneurs Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher have started an animated series called “Stoner Cats” that only NFT owners can see. When it comes to sports fans, however, a recent survey shows that nearly three in four people are “moderately skeptical” about the longevity of NFT investments.
